Seemingly creeped out by its own existence — and the existence of the humans around it — it’s not long before the humanoid extends its hand with an accepting smile. As described more than 50 years ago by roboticist Masahiro Mori, there may be a limit to how comfortable people feel with realistic-looking robots — an effect Mori coined “the uncanny valley.”
