Design Director for new 500M long waterfront promenade street programmed with restaurants & bars

2013/14Zhongshan ‘TRANSFORMER’

Design  Director, currently under construction - 24 hour mixed use - Art, Cultural, Retail & Entertainments complex in Zhongshan city.

2012/13Vanke Plaza Fuzhou, PRC

Design Director for new 200,000 sqm mixed commercial and residential district in center of Fuzhou city, under construction.

2012/13Nanjing U-Park, PRC

Design Director for master plan of 1.5 million sqm science & technology campus in Nanjing, including hospitality & mixed commercial, first phase under construction.

2011/13Zhoushan Sports Stadium, PRC

Design Director for 6000 seat sports stadium in Zhoushan, under construction.

2011/13Dong Gang Commercial Lake District, Zhoushan, PRC

Design Director for 300,000 sqm business & entertainment master plan, first phase under construction.

Design Director for 200,000 sqm science park master plan in Huaqiao.

               Design Director for Amusements & Entertainment Building with 120M tall Information Tower.  Design proposals taken to Design Development stage.

2009 Zhoushan Island Waterfront Regeneration, PRC

               Design Director for 76,000 sqm Coastline Entertainment Resort, Phase1 construction completed October 2009.

2008 Zhongshan Butterfly District, Zhongshan, PRC

               Design Director for 60,000sqm Creative Business District in Zhongshan City.  First phase completed 2010.

            Various master plan commissions including ‘Street of Culture’ in Shanghai for the late artist Chen Yifei.  

2004/08Shanghai International Cruise Terminal, PRC ($250m USD)

               Design Director for master plan and detail design of 260,000 sqm Shanghai International Cruise Terminal - Business & Entertainment District, winner of Best Mixed Use Project under MIPIM 2011.  

2002South Quay, Canary Wharf, London, UK (Budget £70m)

              Project Architect at Alsop Architects for 30,000sqm 45 storey residential tower with supporting F&B waterfront promenade.

North Quay, Canary Wharf, London, UK (Budget £15m)

               Project Architect at Alsop Architects for design of public support facilities including pedestrian bridge.

Queen Mary Medical Research Centre, London, UK (Budget £28m)

               Project Architect at Alsop Architects for design of a medical research centre, later named the ‘Blizard Building’, including public exhibition spaces, completed 2005.  Winner of RIBA Regional Award 2006, and Civic Trust Award 2006.

Faade Architect at Alsop Architects for design of OCAD’s studio arts building, completed 2004.  Recipient of various International Awards.

John Curran Architects (JCA) see clear benefits in being affiliated with the APDF in providing a platform to promote our young & energetic design studio.  A design focused studio growing with both local and international design talent.  JCA participation in APDF conferences, and in publications, exhibition and awards will be a way to network & gain further insights about the dynamic market in Asia, and a way to gain recognition for the contributions made by JCA’s completed projects, in improving the quality of life for all society in China.


John Curran has over 20 years international experience as an architect in the UK and China, focusing on visions for mixed use environments.  John Curran has been practicing in China for 12 years, during this time he has designed and realised a large body of work:  700,000 sqm of new and regenerated mixed use communities completed or under construction, in cities including Shanghai, Fuzhou, the Zhoushan archipelago &Zhongshan City.


John Curran Architects received ‘International Project of the Year’ Award at the Irish Design Awards, Europe 2015, for their Zhoushan Sports Stadium Project.  


Previously John established the Alsop studio in Shanghai in 2004, and as a Co- owner and Design Director of Spark Architects, he was responsible for the design and delivery of the Shanghai International Cruise Terminal, a 260,000 sqm Business & Entertainment District in the North Bund – winner of Best Mixed Use Award at MIPIM 2011.


John Curran Architects (JCA) was set up in January 2013, allowing John to continue to produce Visions for mixed use developments for his clients, and enter into the field of Product Design.
